Description- as you descend down the escalator of Queens Arcade Cardiff you are greeted by a flurry of mysterious and unfamiliar sounds. On further investigation the first visual explanation of the sounds are two videos presented on plasma screens in the windows. The videos display closeups of a person carving wood , as you enter the space the sounds echo around you from a line of well placed speakers and you are then presented with a cello on a stand.
The performance started with the artist producing sounds which the musician would mimic on the cello. This performance then continued with a dramatic display of the artist picking up the discarded pieces from the cellos creation and in a violent yet caressive manner dropping the pieces onto the gallery floor as the cello played. The performance ended with the musicians own unique adaptation of baroque style music.
Experience- I feel that this was a fantastic visual representation of the brutality involved in the making of the cello through to the actual beauty of the object. The birth of a cello in all its hidden sounds .
This was a collaborative project.
