“Counting space” 2020 In the beginning of the pandemic I was performing whilst pregnant in the tB lounge window as part of the collective concentric For International women’s Day. Entitled “Waiting Room” they were flash performances dealing with the anxiety of waiting for Labour to begin and feeling a spectacle. Due to the coronavirus 19 the residue remained on show in the window for 147 days.

My children are the greatest worry to me and how they have been affected. It seemed to make sense to take the residue down in a comical way. My sons words resonate with me, he is 3, “what do strangers look like mama” a statement that holds hilarity yet a dark under tone. To him the virus was some alien thing. I don’t know the affects this will have on him, I do know the contrast was great as there were moments of such happiness as we spent so much time together my two sons and my partner. It made sense to try to produce the comedic sadness and anxiety in the take down of “waiting room” The transition into “counting space” counting down the days , the wearing of masks, looking into windows .

The main shelter of the urban environment the umbrella, has also been used as a shield in an attempt to repel rubber bullets during the protests in Hong Kong of late. The umbrella became a symbol of the protests. In this instance the umbrella becomes a note pad to share the curiosities and the worries of individuals at night. We often wear a different face at night to the day time, but as we walk alone what do we think of the fact that we originate from different backgrounds and different age groups. Temmah and Stephen Hammett, both are dyslexic, a good example of an umbrella term and an attempt to categorise different ways of thinking. Sharing their stories on a walk of U V illumination, connected by blood they will build with words.

INSIDE / OUTSIDE is a performative collaboration between TEMMAH and Charlotte Morgan in which the two artists will be joined together within a fabric “body apparatus”. For this particular performance, the apparatus made by TEMMAH is soft and moveable, designed by the two artists to accommodate the needs of Charlotte Morgan who has physical disabilities and chronic pain. The apparatus is reminiscent of bed linen, in which the body seeks comfort and refuge from the world, particularly in times of illness or grief. This refuge is usually sought in private, but as the two artists join themselves together within the soft apparatus, they take the inside outside and into the public space of the museum.

In an intimate performance the artists will work together to ensure they stay within the apparatus, which is held up only by keeping tension within their bodies and following each other’s movements closely. They will each trace their bodies through drawing; Morgan will trace the rhythms and pressure of her chronic pain (with the pain itself dictating Morgan’s, and as a result, both artists movements), and TEMMAH will trace the tension within her body as she works harder to support the apparatus as Morgan’s body weakens. The marks drawn will externalise the internal and have an other-worldly quality about them as they transcend the body.

Voice is unique to each individual we are more unfamiliar with our own.

The evolution of human beings is reproduced in an event for each individual known as “the descent of the larynx” at the age of 4 months. This event is attached to the evolution of language and the tone of human voice as we know it. Only one other animal have a larynx in a similar position, a Red deer. A symbol of what we once were, the animal self.

We blame ourself, who else is left, we carry stones. On the 28th March I experienced a miscarriage it was my second; in Japanese culture they have a Buddhist ceremony called ‘the water child memorial service’ devoted to abortion, miscarriage and stillbirth. A stone is represented as the lost baby and they wash the stone babies with hope of rebirth. There is very little research of mental health in connection with the trauma of miscarriage.I will attach brushes to my face, drawing attention to the head and I will wash stones in water from the sea and cast them free.

Water is imbedded in Welsh culture, Saint David drank only water and was known as ‘ the water drinker’. As a self imposed penance he would stand up to his neck in a lake of cold water reciting scripture.

In life presser builds up as a result of gender, status, work, relationships and identity we carry; that weight heavy on us. Feelings become displaced cross over we spread the weight evenly as to not shatter the precepts of coping. Is it ok not to cope can we share the load. Who is the other? How can we really deem ourselves as different from the other when it is quite impossible to truly walk in the others shoes, with past history, experiences and actions that correspond to formulate each other’s characteristics. To empathise understand and share the feelings of another. Do we only respond to reflections of ourselves ? Time is Fractal not linear we remember things as we want to remember them but how can we gauge control of the subconscious

Boundary 2018. @AOTH
Boundary 2018. @AOTH

A performative action that explores the flux of borderlines. Involving ideas of restriction, cultural identity and divide. Boundary’s are developed whether they be physical or internal . However not a constant but contrary a fluid concept built upon by ideals. Ideals can change and boundary’s expanded . After the position we are in following political agendas it is important to deem that these lines can be crossed. If this can be changed we can also change it. The medium of chalk has been used to amplify the idea that all these lines are illusions that can fade with time.

Degradable 2017.
Degradable 2017.

Break the restrictions of preconceptions and share as a freedom of expression.

There are traditions/garments that originally had an application that linger in present contemporary culture, existing displaced from their purpose and proposed now as an almost ritual act of defining the individual as unique.

Some of these preconceptions have become restrictions.

‘Degradable’ is about chipping away at this repression through the creation of body attachment to the face, made from materials that degrade with use. The materials act as a medium which produce an image.

This performance is a play on control in the mark making process as my vision is impaired by the helmet/exoskeleton. I am no longer aware of the marks produced, just movement. In addition, the exoskeleton itself is in a limited way autonomous, which further affects the outcome of the work. The lines between me and the exoskeleton become unclear in the action of movement.

In contemporary western culture it is not deemed unusual to communicate only using the means of social networking sites, email or mobile phones. Through these means communication has become more accessible; however there are some senses in the wake of technological advancement which are becoming obsolete to communication, such as touch and smell, (face to face contact). This performance aims to experiment with the human body’s parameters and its awareness of the prosthetics’ and the identifiable imprint that resonates upon our environment.

This is one of an experimental series of performances experimenting with simplified technological interaction (in the form of performance and installation/exoskeletons). I became intrigued by the idea that the term ‘cyborg’, originally meant to refer to more simplified technological integration to human physiology, such as someone riding a bike.

Good Enough To Eat.

The main subject matter throughout my work is the manifestation of the human condition, this includes childhood, death, psychological/ physiological aspects and the identifiable imprint that resonates upon our environment. My video art has a more playful approach dealing with a contrast of the senses and word play to invoke a sense of hilarity. The focus of my current practice is the effect social media has on physiological communication. Recent performance practices focus on communication through movement, introducing a prosthetic element.
